1. What has everyone enjoyed recently?

A recent walk or run says more than ‘fairly fit’. Think about how long you were out, the amount of uphill and how you felt on the descent. Share examples from the whole group when speaking with a leader.

2. What kind of terrain feels comfortable?

A long valley walk and a shorter path with steep drops can feel very different. Mention confidence with heights, loose ground, narrow paths and long descents. You do not need to justify preferring a different kind of day.

3. What do you want time for?

Photographs, wildlife, an interest in plants, conversation or a physical challenge all change the pace. Pick what matters most. A route can be a means of having that experience, rather than a target that defines it.

4. What are the practical limits?

Start with your dates, available time and where you are staying. Discuss transport, lift tickets, equipment and food with the independent leader. Ask which costs are included before agreeing their offer.

5. What could change the plan?

Ask how the leader handles changing weather, unsuitable conditions or a group that needs a different pace. Confirm their terms for alternatives, rescheduling and cancellation. Current local information belongs in the decision.
